Neo-Vernacular Kitchen (NVK): The Future of Sustainable Living

The future of sustainable living is taking shape in the Marche region with the Neo-Vernacular Kitchen (NVK), an innovative research project that redefines the concept of the living module. A great report by Andrea Canducci.

𝗡𝗲𝗼-𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻 is the first prototype of a 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 that can be combined with residential architectures, equipped with 𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱-𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 with an envelope capable of 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 according to the surrounding conditions!

in the context of structural design, we faced some particular challenges, including 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 and the impact of a 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆!

𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹

𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘅-𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 at regular intervals proved sufficient to activate a "shape" behavior capable of self-stabilizing the system. However, 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 in consideration of the repeated assembly and disassembly phases to which the module will be subjected in the coming years!

this engineering exercise will be very useful for us to prepare advanced engineering solutions for similar larger-scale projects!

Università di Camerino: development of the architectural idea based on eco-sustainable principles
Università Politecnica delle Marche: development of parametric and sustainable design methodologies
Università degli Studi di Perugia: study on variable thermal transmittance and material circularity
